Submit   I am Caitlyn. There's really not much more to be said about it... I'd try to explain who I am, but every time I think I know, something shows me I am not the person I thought I was.

I’m confused as to how anyone could say Vivien Leigh is overrated.  She more than deserved the praise she got when she was alive, and still deserves the praise she gets today.  I think the fact that she hasn’t faded into oblivion like so many other people says something.  Four for you, Vivien Leigh!

Who says this? The lady is UNDERrated. Perhaps they’ve confused the two words. Also, you go Vivien Leigh!

Um, Vivien Leigh is not even rated. The person who said that likely only saw her in Gone With the Wind, as is the case with the vast majority of the population.

Confession time: I think Vivien Leigh is overrated. BUT! I also have not seen very many of her films. What is the perfect Vivien Leigh film to convince one that she was indeed all that she’s cracked up to be? I’m trying, ladies, I am.
And part of what makes me think she’s overrated is the kids these days who see GWTW & think it makes them a classic film fan just because they’ve seen it. Nothing against her personally, really, I just see her as sort of the mascot for those people. Her & Audrey.

Audrey is overrated.  Viv is NOT.  How can you even say that about Blanche Dubois!?  And GWTW sucks donkey ballz.  She wasn’t in so many movies, but apparently she was also a FANTABULOUS stage actress.

I think GWTW is overrated (DON’T Y’ALL STONE ME I love that thing but let’s be realistic here) but Vivien as an actress is not. A lot of the so-called “praise” she gets today come from kids who, like psychobiddy said, have only seen GWTW and nothing else. When they say meaningless things like “Fierce!” or “Rhett and Scarlett 4eva!” they’re not really praising Vivien, they’re praising the Scarlett O’Hara character (who comes off as a lot more extreme in the film than in the book. I guess people are drawn to that?). If that makes sense. …it probably doesn’t.

I really like GWTW, but I also grew up on it, with my grandmother and my mom liking it.  I admit to people that it’s overrated in a lot of ways, I have read the book and liked it as much as I like the movie.  I found though, that she’s a lot less likeable towards the end of the book because she just makes so many mistakes, you want to stone her a little bit.  Most of my attachment of that story comes from growing up with it and admiring Scarlett’s perseverance; not to mention Rhett’s sexiness. I also like it because it is more real than most endings, Rhett leaves her, which is what would really happen if someone acted that selfishly. It kills me when I watch it, but it would have made me angry if they had stayed together.
On the Vivien Leigh note, thought she was excellent in most of the films I have seen her in, I wish I could have seen her in some of her stage roles.  In most classic films, it’s less defined between film and stage, you see film acting develop from the stage; in that way you can see that she’s got the stuff. If anything, the fact that GWTW is overrated is proof that she’s good actress; she got roles as different characters even though her performance as Scarlett was so prolific.
